Helping Kids and Dogs Build a Great Relationship
There’s nothing sweeter than the bond between a child and their dog—but it’s important to guide that relationship so it’s safe, respectful, and fun for everyone.
1. Teach Gentle Interactions
Before your child approaches the dog, show them how to use calm voices, slow movements, and gentle hands. Remind them that dogs don’t always enjoy big hugs or rough play—sometimes a nice scratch behind the ears is all they need.
2. Create “Safe Zones”
Give your dog a spot they can retreat to when they need a break, and make sure kids understand that this space is off-limits for play. This helps prevent overwhelm for your pup and gives them a way to self-regulate.
3. Involve Kids in Simple Training
If your dog is learning a new cue, let your child help (with your supervision). Kids can toss treats for a “sit” or “down,” which teaches both the dog and the child how to work together respectfully.
With a little guidance, kids and dogs can grow up side-by-side—building trust, learning from each other, and creating memories that last a lifetime.
